The Call to Mercy Ministry

Many Christians have come to a position of seeing mercy ministry as “secondary duty”. It is something that we try to do if we have enough time or resources to dedicate to “social work”. The Bible doesn’t portray mercy ministry as secondary. Jesus Christ taught that man not only receives and experiences the mercy of God, but that he is also called to practice mercy toward others.

Thanks Drew. That’s an amazing sermon – I just wish it hadn’t been preached on the other side of the world to me! I’ve never yet heard a social justice message that actually relates back to the Gospel and specifically frees you from the guilt/defensiveness response.

    Normally it’s:

    Jesus helped the poor
There are lots of poor people
    Get off your butt

    I like how you added:

Don’t do it because you feel bad
Don’t do it because it will make you a “good” person
Do it because of the joy, love and freedom Christ gives you

It’s inspired me more than any sermon I’ve heard in a long while.

A lot of Tim Keller influence. That guy is the master at taking things back to the gospel!
