Ok, I just saw that Fellowship Church launched a new website. I’d love to get your opinion about it….
Question: If you weren’t a Christian, what does the site convey to you about our faith? About Jesus?

interesting. well, right off the top, there’s nothing about this site visually that would tip me off that this is a church. moreover, if it’s true that the eye is drawn first to the upper right, then my first impression would be that Ed is central to this whole thing.

Ed is a great speaker, to be sure. I don’t see anything overtly wrong with the site. I think the central weakness of Fellowship is the weakness of many (most?) mega-churches, and that is a total lack of expository preaching. Cool ideas? Yup. But cool ideas are not the power unto salvation.

Pete: I was asked to give a prelaunch critique of the site, and I expressed with Brian Bailey, the web manager at Fellowship Church, the same concern that you had…that it seemed too focused on Ed. Brian told me they are planning on rotating that picture out about once a week.
Also, with FC’s team preaching approach, Ed allows others to speak in his place much more often than the average pastor does. So even though his charisma and personality are big factors in the church’s success, I think (hope) he’s taking steps to make sure it’s not all about him.

I think it is a great church website. There are no crosses or anything of course, but I think that a website should be a vehicle to give information in a non-threatening way. I dont really think that the webpage is the place to try to get someone to confess Jesus as their savior and repent…
While I dont think I’d go for having MY picture as the central part of a web page- from what I’ve seen teaching IS central at Fellowship, so showing a picture of their senior pastor teaching seems like a reasonable thing.

If I was a non believer this site would convey to me that the church is something to serve me and provide stuff for me. As opposed to what I believe to be a more Biblical view of coming to church to Worship God, the pastors and elders are helping to facilitate that as well as teach Gods word to the flock.
Quote from site “high-energy, life-changing services. You’ll never be the same!”
That’s funny because I have actually left church before just like I came. I have committed the same sins after leaving as well.
