Eighth Church of Christ Scientist

San Diego Reader Sheep & GoatsMy column for Sheep & Goats this week is a Christian Science church. Mary Baker Eddy started this ‘cult’ in 1879, the late 1800’s was a breading ground for cults because of the philosophical mindset of the time. During the 1800’s we also have Mormonism and Jehovah‚Äôs Witnesses founded. Read the article, if you are interested post a question/comment and I’ll share more about their beliefs or my experience. Whilst some the Christian Scientist beliefs are mildly amusing, sadly, the reality is these people are tragically deceived.

“Mormonism”, as you phrased it, is not a cult or anything near a cult. Please do not associate religions that are not cults with one’s that are. “Mormonism” isn’t the proper term anyway. LDS is more politically correct as it stands for Latter Day Saints (the church’s full title is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Yes, they are in fact Christians who follow his teachings like any other Christian church, not “Mormons” or “Joseph Smithians”. While they do patiently tolerate the misunderstandings and the rumours quite well, I am sure that they don’t need a newspaper article handing out the notion that they are a cult. I would expect more from a newspaper article & its reporter. I’m sure Jehovah’s Witnesses would not appreciate your comment either, though I do not know enough about their religion to know whether or not they do fall into that category. The bottom line is, just because you don’t understand a religion or think it is odd, doesn’t make it a cult. You should also be careful how you phrase things or not because, whether you meant to or not, your phrase makes “Mormons” & JWs appear to be cults as well.
