Church Planting, Technology & Culture

How do you fund a church plant? For many planters money is the number one challenge to being able to pursue their calling. I've been thinking about creative ways to do this and wanted to post an idea: (This is at the idea stage, so things may change)
In order to (1) help church planters fund their ministry or (2) bring people on and train them up within a hands-on environment we would create a 'tentmaker' company. (Picture of Paul the 'tentmaker) This company would allow church planters to be trained and work part (or full time) from home or here in San Diego. The nature of the position would offer a residual commission, which would slowly taper off after a church planter quit working. (We're looking at a couple companies now that look like they'd work.) The objective would be to create a plan that would fit earning goals of the planter, including after they quit working.
For people who want to transition into ministry, we would offer an intensive training. During the day, trainees would work roughly 5 hours but also take one-class a day. This class would teach practical theology for ministry, philosophy on ministry, missiology with hands-on projects to actively do this work in a multi-site church plant. All this training would be done with other men who are learning from one-another and living in a community.
For example, we have a recent church plant on a college campus. A person could come, work, be trained and actively participate in the new church plant. The goal would be to transition the person to full-time ministry or to equip them to go plant a church at another college campus with a funding base from their work.
This is just a start, I appreciate any feedback/suggestions. Church planters, is this something you would have wanted to do if you could have?
UPDATE: The Tentmaker Group has launched to help church planters raise funding.

Drew is an elder/pastor at Kaleo Church and CEO of Monk Development. Kaleo is a church planting movement in San Diego. Drew spends much of his time thinking about church planting strategy, web missiology and being a husband and father of two (Gideon & Roman). More about Drew Goodmanson.

I think the idea has a lot of promise.
I know as one who is getting ready to launch out to start a church (we had our first official gathering this week) funds are an issue for our living. So I’ll be very interested to see how your idea develops, but to me it seems like a great concept.
You really are thinking in the right direction. We have been thinking about this alot lately as a family. We will be immigrating to Montreal, Canada in the next year or so to begin a church. Income is a big question for us right now, because Montreal makes it really difficult to get a job that has a sufficient income as an immigrant. Along with this, I think the planter needs to think in the area of multiple streams of income. I look forward to seeing where this takes you.
What types of ideas do you have for business that would fit the bill?
Mike - You’re flying into town Monday, so we’ll talk. I’ll announce specifics to everyone else soon. David and I are meeting with the executive team of a company we believe would work out well.
I really wished there was something like this here in Australia. The Church I serve in was planted 5 years ago in a tough neighborhood in Melbourne.
My Pastor has been serving for 5 years - working 3 days a week and sending his family broke in his efforts to build our church. After 5 years, we have about 70 people. This is tough when you hear about what happens in Acts29 bootcamps when pastors talk about the growth they expect etc.
I’m ok as I have a full time job but I so wish my pastor was financially blessed outside the church as he has it pretty tough - especially given the fact his 4 child was born 4 days ago.
We are consuming Acts29 and Resurgence material at the moment and are toying with the idea of applying through the network. Our Church has always been “missional” in nature - we just didn’t know it until we came across Driscoll et al almost a year ago.
A problem for us is that Australia is so geographically isolated. As I said at the start, I wish we had something like this in Australia.
Strange, I almost called you about this very subject the other day.
As someone hoping to plant in the next few years I think this is a great idea. I wonder what type of work it would involve? Especially if it can be done from home. But I think its very promising.
I really love that you guys are just day in and day out trying to equip people to build the kingdom.
I like the direction of the idea, however, I would suggest training and equiping church planters to integrate into the marketplace rather than creating a seperate entity. I am a voctional church planter and work as an IT Project Manager to support myself and family (don’t like the term bi-voctational as I would dump the IT job if I could). This provides a regular connection to the “real” world and provides needed financial support for the planter. If we are raising up leaders to plant our churches it should not be hard to see them rise in the business world. This would provide a great test to see if an individual has the “chops” for church planting. If a church planter is still pulling shots at SBUX as a barrista after a year he/she probably should let go of the idea of leading a group of people in a church plant. But as an individual is recognized as a leader in the business environment the church can focus its resources on developing the pastor in this person rather than trying to turn them into a leader, the business world will make this investment and the church can benefit from that. Just a couple of thoughts. Thanks for reading/listening. - Mike Fullerton
Sam - Should have info in a month or so. It has to work with people @ at home, so people can plant and provide.
Mike Fullerton - Their role would require them to continually be connecting with people in the marketplace, so yes. But the entity would be designed specifically for church planters/ministry transition. As for SBUX (btw- nice use of the stock symbol), I would add, that it depends on the ‘reason’ why a person is pulling shots. Worldly success doesn’t necessarily equal good church leadership.
Great Idea. As a former self employeed entrepreneur i see lots of potential in the idea. Having my own business and working form home allowed me time for ministry, school and family.
There is a church in our city who we have been building a relationship with. They are very much into planting churches. One of their ideas has resinated with us. One of their elders has an electronics company which handles sound, lighting, security systems etc. He employees several key people from the church allowing them a flexible schedule for mininitry and training. The church is planting a church 70 miles south of us and so he is opening a new branch in that city employing the lead planter at the new branch. He creates opportunity for cultural connection through work (a benefit of not having it a home business) and he provides the plantor with flexiblility. They have in place a plan to start him full time and then move him gradually to fulltime planting over the next couple years as the church takes root.
Its a really cool plan. Added benefit God has blessed his business allow him to give more to his home church and hire and train more potential leaders and planters.
I am transitioning from full time missionary to a US based lead planter. With my bills doubling and a baby on the way, I had to have another stream of income (I agree with peavyhouse that multiple streams of income may be a solution for some planters - if those streams don’t become a distraction).
A friend of mine is selling a business that he started several years ago, which secures his personal financial future and allows him to take the reigns of the mission organization I founded 3 years ago. Meanwhile he had the buyers agree to take me on as a sub-contractor, which they were more than happy to do. This allows me to work 12-15 hours a week from home and provide well for my family. In fact, we may be able to use all the funds that come into the new church plant to fund our launch and I’ll still have plenty of time to spend with our leaders, network, see my family, and meet the ministry demands that are required of a planter.
Whether it’s a model like the one Drew and Co are working on or a more contextualized situation like Steev shared, I believe God has some way for each planter to get it done and I love hearing the miraculous stories of how it all happens.
Really great post Drew -and good feedback guys.
Drew,
I think it is a phenomenal idea. Funds for a church planter are critical. I am 36 and working toward planting. Currently I work at a church that will be funding my church planter internship at any church I choose (our own program is not yet in place). And then they will support me when I plant. This has been a huge blessing and a wonderfully gracious offer. However, a great majority of planters don’t get this type of support. It has made me wonder what I would do if I were trying to plant a church while working a ‘regular’ job as I did for 10+ years and had a family like I do now.
In planting churches it is far easier for young studs with a young wife and no children to make the jump to plant. As such, it seems we leave a lot of experience and gifts on the sidelines that would plant great churches. A plan like you are developing sounds beautiful to help address this.
Most of the challenge would seem to be in matching the planters work experience and skill set with an appropriate job that in turn pays enough on a part time basis (especially in SD). As you mentioned in a response previously, the skills to rise in the business ranks are not necessarily the same skills for a church planter.
If I wasn’t already being provided for so well, as a church planter I would definitely be interested. Heck, I am still interested. You and David are two of the most consistently truly innovative, action-oriented, missional guys I have come across. Seriously, you guys are a joy to read and listen to.
(PS: We met at NNCC with the A29 guys. I am with the Village)
Blessings in your ministry Drew.
Guys,
God continues to open some awesome doors for us as we get closer to moving to the East Village in NYC.
My father-in-law, who is the second pastor at a past church plant in Dahlonega, Ga, sold his landscape company and purchased 49% of a Promotional Products Company that has been successful for 13 years.
Now here is the deal. I have been praying for a “tent-making” profession that would free me up by creating a residual income that would support my wife and I to plant more churches in the NYC area, without having to need a salary. Today my Inlaw-Dad called me and we spoke about how I was going to provide for his little girl in NYC and how I was going to raise money and so on, then he got down to business. Apparently, he and his partner feel they need to support church planting efforts and especially those in NYC… go figure.
They offered me 50% commission of every thing that is purchased through me to the church plants that Mandy and I start and sponsor.
Ask your self how much your churches and the churches that are started around your circles of influence is spent on pens, cups, bench cushions, t-shirts and you name it, I promise they brand and imprint it. According to most church planters the average amount for imprinting and promo products is $4,000 to $10,000 in the first 6 months, then on average approximately $1000-$3000 a quarter for the first year.
Now I recognize that this is a blessing and I want to bless others. So, here’s how you can help us and benefit. If your gatherings are looking to purchase these types of items, just consider going through me. If you make a purchase, I will give 10% of my commission to your gatherings and 5% to you for a finders fee and your gathering will be supporting church planting in NYC. If you send others and they purchase, I will give you a 10% finders fee and you will be sponsoring church planting efforts in NYC… see a trend forming here?
I am setting up the website called MyChurchPromos.com for you guys to view and please feel free to ask any questions.
I know some are wondering why they received this e-mail from out of the blue, but each of you were selected because you are a church planter, know church planters, have a heart for church planting and are looking to aid in church planting. Why not increase
Definitely looking for feed back on this idea.

a few years ago, a pastor in san diego asked if i could plant a filipino church in his city. i prayed about it for several years seeing that i was then planting a church in southern manila.
this july i’m visiting the USA for a month but i’m thinking about getting into the placement industry. i’m developing some really good connections with christian recruitment people in the philippines who are more than willing to train nurses and teachers (and the like) to plant asian home churches in many states.
i’m more like doing business so i can plant churches and empower others to do the same. what do you think? or perhaps some out there have some ideas or insights regarding this?
would love to hear what you brothers & sisters have to say.
I think this is a great idea and have been thinking a lot about it myself. I am going from a staff pastor of an existing church to an elder in a new plant, but I can only get 6 months salary from the existing church. Our lead guy still has another year and a half of support from his sending church. So, I am at a place of having to find something else to do to support my family while we plant this thing.
I would be very interested to hear more about what you are thinking.

That is great that you are able to find the time to be an IT Project Mgr. and church planter but most IT project Mgr’s I know work way too much and to add church planting to a job like that I could see the church planters home and family suffering. I think one aspect of Drews idea is that it would allow for flex scheduling more than most employment. I could not disagree more with your statement about church planters rising up in the business world and a barrista should give up on leading a church plant after a year. That type of thinking would go over great at a John Maxwell / Ken Blanchard type seminar but I do not see any type of biblical basis for that. A church planter will be a leader no doubt but that does not at all mean barristas are not leaders or that leaders should be moving up in the business world.
I would be very interested in something of this nature if I could do it in Florida,

Hi Friends,
That is surely a good thing, having such kind of work that supports church planters.
I am a planter myself and am working on being able to do something big in Hollywood.
I am planning on planting a non-denominational church on Hollywood Blvd, West Hollywood. I have been living in Hollywood for a couple of months and I have noticed there is just 1 Baptist church,1 Catholic, 1 Presbyterian and 4 Scientology churches, within the area of the Hollywood Walk of Fame-Hollywood Blvd/Sunset Blvd. I don’t know about you, but I think it is so unfair that this place that sometimes has more than 100,000 people in a single weekend doesn’t have any churches around.
For your information, it is right by the famous Kodak theater, Chinese Theater, El Capitan and the Roosevelt and Renaissance Hotels.
My vision is to plant a multi cultural, multi racial church where everyone feels at home no matter where they are from. After all Hollywood is the theater of dreams. But more than just that, a place where the truth of Jesus Christ is told without fear of provoking any body, yet with love and humility.
I believe it is time the Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is brought into the main scene at this place of extreme belief in self and scientology.
The challenge for me is to raise the funds to do the work and meet people of like spirit who will partner with me in this awesome work.It is not easy considering that am a missionary from Uganda and the job am working right now is at the point where I work 6 days a week and the pay barely pays the bills and I can’t save any money to use for the church plant.
Am thinking of starting the church (Jesus Center Church of Hollywood)in a hotel conference hall, say at the Roosevelt Thompson or any other hotel around. That would cost tons of money to rent I believe, but I know it will be worth it. I have been to music stores around and I found that I can get some sound equipments, including a Bass Guitar, Electric Guitar, a set of Drums, Key board, 6 Cordless Mics, and a Mixer for about USD.3000.00
Please keep me in your prayers and if you feel like partnering with me, let me know.
God bless you all.
In Christ’s service
Martin.
