Church Planting and Survivability

Ed Stetzer has been working an a number of church planting statistics that we've all been waiting for…well wait no more:
Statistics are a dangerous thing. Some use them well; some use them badly; but most evangelical leaders use them—and church planting is no exception.
One of the statistics that is frequently cited but never sourced is the survivability and health of church plants. I've heard quite an array of statistics—but one of my favorites is that often repeated "80 percent of new churches fail in the first year."
Well, not so fast.

As someone getting ready to step out to launch a church I have been very intrigued by the stats and have been waiting eagerly for the report from Stetzer. One of the questions on the report is, what does year 1 constitute, or where does it begin? Does it start with public launch service? Does it start with landing in an area? So on the report I wonder what constitutes year one.

I’m not sure what Stetzer used but I would think year one starts when public worship services start. If you fail before that maybe you never really begun. On his church attendence graph I’m wondering if that includes kids. I tend to include them in stats as they are part of the church (and the numbers look better).
