<description>&lt;a href="http://www.sdreader.com/published/2005-06-23/letters.html"&gt;Letter to the Editor of the Reader&lt;/a&gt;:

Eastern Importance
I have some news for the priest Edward Gallagher ("Sheep and Goats," June 16). What is today called the Roman Catholic Church began with Leo the First, the Bishop of Rome, in the 5th Century. Onto Gregory the First in the early 7th Century the papal monarchy began to develop and it climaxed with Innocent the Third in the early 13th Century. From the time of Our Lord to the 5th Century, the Eastern churches were extremely important. The Roman Bishop began to presume predominance by the 11th Century.

Let's get our history straight, Gallagher.
